Preparing for winter

Preparing for winter designHow do I keep the lawn in good condition?
Consider an autumn feed but remember to follow the feed manufacturer's instructions. Raking or scraping and poking holes in the lawn with a pitchfork are all additional tasks that you may need to think about, especially if the lawn gets a lot of use and the soil is heavy.

How would you protect and disguise garden furniture during winter?
Garden furniture has to cope with winter conditions unless you have space somewhere (in a shed or maybe even inside your house) to store it. Putting plastic, even green, covers over furniture can look horrible, but if this is the only alternative, move the furniture and covers to a sheltered spot where everything is out of eyeshot.

What are your most effective winter planting combinations?
Architectural plants with striking foliage, such as Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' and Mahonia japonica 'Winter Sun' look good in winter sunlight and backlit at night. For larger gardens, try a massed planting of Cornus alba 'Sibirica' underplanted with scilla species.
